Slam the Scam Day – March 6, 2025

On March 6, 2025, join Metrofino in observing National Slam the Scam Day, a day organized by the Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General to raise awareness about government imposter scams. These scams are becoming more sophisticated and widespread, affecting people across the country. Scammers often impersonate trusted organizations or individuals, creating a sense of worry and urgency to trick you.

In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers lost over $10 billion to scams, with more than $4.6 billion lost to investment scams and nearly $2.7 billion lost to imposter scams.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and report it to oig.ssa.gov.

Protect Yourself: Red Flags to Watch For

  • Pressure to act immediately, such as threats of fines if you don’t send a payment quickly.
  • Requests for unusual payment methods like cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers, which are harder to trace.
  • Promises of prizes or claims that your money will be "increased."
  • Requests for sensitive information such as your social security number, account numbers, passwords, or secure access codes. Metrofino will never ask for this information.

Stay vigilant and protect yourself and your finances by staying informed about the latest scams. Report any suspicious activity immediately. Visit www.ssa.gov/scam for more information.
